The Golden Gate Bridge
This is one of the symbols of the U.S.A: it’s the famous bridge that connects San Francisco with Marin County, in California. It was completed in 1937, and the length of its central section is 1,281 metres. It is the second longest suspension bridge in the US, and it hangs from cables supported by towers at each end.
This bridge is not made of gold, and it is actually orange, but it is called the Golden Gate Bridge because it crosses the Golden Gate, which is the water between San Francisco Bay and the Pacific Ocean. Did you know that it takes four years to paint this bridge, and the work of painting it never stops? Isn’t that amazing?
The Statue Of Liberty
This is another world-famous symbol of America, this statue stands on Liberty Island in New York Harbour.
Frédéric Auguste Bartholdi designed it and France gave it to the US people in 1884, and, in 1984, it was made a World Heritage Site. It is actually the statue of a woman holding the torch of freedom (liberty), so it has become a symbol of freedom.
This was the first American sight that many people who went to the US for a better life saw from the ships.
Cape Canaveral
If a person thinks of the space race, he’ll think of Cape Canaveral, the US base in Florida, on the Atlantic coast, where NASA launches spacecraft and rockets.
NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration. This world famous institution, based in Texas, has always used Cape Canaveral since 1947.
Did you know that Cape Canaveral was called Cape Kennedy between 1963 and 1973?
The Niagara Falls
This is probably the most popular natural attraction in the US. The Niagara Falls are a famous American waterfall on the Niagara River that joins Lake Eire to Lake Ontario on the US-Canadian border.
The Niagara Falls actually consist of two waterfalls (the American Falls and the Horseshoe Falls). Between the waterfalls there’s an island called Goat Island.
Beside being a very romantic tourist attraction, the waters of the Niagara Falls are also used to produce electricity.
Both the US and Canada have cities called Niagara Falls, and they are joined by the Rainbow Bridge.
