This poem was written by William Golding in the 1952, speaks about a group of schoolboys which landed in a desert island in the pacific ocean after a plane crash during an imaginary nuclear war. When they arrived in the island they realized that there were no adults survived. The children tried to give themselves a rational and democratic organization they took a shell as the symbol of their government. Ralf and Jack were the strongest personality which had influence on the rest of the children, and this fact made the group divided into two groups. Golding wanted to characterized every child with a specific personality: Ralf was very diplomatic, Piggy was rational, Simon was very shy and sensitive, Jack was the antagonist irrational impulsive and evil.
All the children a part from Simon thought that in the island there was a monster. So they killed a pig and stacked its head in a stick to protect them from the monster. one night Simon went in the forest and in found out that “the monster” was just the skeleton of a dead pilot. While he come back to tell is discover to the others, the group leaded by jack was having a sort of primitive rite and they were completely out of mind, thinking that Simon was the monster they killed him.
After this terrible homicide all the children become more and more savages and irrational all the children a part from Piggy left Ralf’s group to follow Jack , and when Ralf tried to speak with them they killed Piggy with a rock. Ralf escaped from the children that wanted to kill him, fortunately at the end a sailor arrived and saved him.
Golding wanted to express that the evil is inside everyone since we are children and how we can became like savages when there are no rules.
